Christopher Hitchins is jumping on the anti-religion bandwagon (and jump-starting his own curmudgeon reputation) with a new book, excerpts of which are appearing on Slate.com. Here he's attacking the Koran & Islam, specifically the dubious ways the Koran and the hadiths were "recorded".

Now I'd reckon that he's missing the point, predictably, that the uncertainties in transmission of the holy scriptures are made up for, for believers, by the assurance that Allah would not let misunderstandings occur.

But still, this bit is interesting. I hadn't read of this. Does anyone know whether it's correct?

"To take one instance that can hardly be called negligible, the Arabic words written on the outside of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem are different from any version that appears in the Koran."

To be fair to the Hitch (and please, let us all be fair to the Hitch) he has been anti-religion his entire career. He's published a book bashing Mother Theresa (which is actually an interesting read). He is on record as not being atheist, but rather anti-theist.

I’m about a third of the way through the book. He criticizes the three principal monotheist religions, but mostly the Christians and Muslims, and, generally, presents many interesting and entertaining observations about the irrationality of believing in a god. It’s fun mind-candy after a day of work.

While Hitchens' The Missionary Position was a good read, I still he think he should've stuck to its original title: Holy Cow
