Er... don't worry, I laughed too:

quote:
All of this has been airbrushed from the new literature of Reagan. But as any balanced account must make clear, Reagan acceded to political compromises as all presidents do once in office--and on many occasions did so willingly. In fact, however often unintentionally, many of his actions as president wound up facilitating liberal objectives. What this clamor of adulation is seeking to deny is that beyond his conservative legacy, Ronald Reagan has bequeathed a liberal one.

Fortunately, Dubya seems to believe Reagan's hagiography, and is therefore determined to make all of the mistakes that Reagan pledged to make but wisely avoided actually making - affirmative action, Roe v Wade, Social Security, separation of Church and State - in short, the entire social conservative agenda. Hell, at this point would we be the least bit surprised if he revived the plan to eliminate the Departments of Energy and Education? He seems stupid enough.

Reagan was also a good deal more politically astute. He always said "If I can't get 100% of what I want this year, I'll take 80% and go for the 20% next year."

Dubya is saying, "If I can't get 100% of what I want this year, I'll simply grab it and not care about how many people I cheese off."

Even though Reagan backed off from the Third Rail of Social Security, et cetera, it is true that in Reagan's time, spending on social services and basic infrastructure began to fall off to make room for military spending.

The lousy highways in a lot of states are a legacy of the abandonment of basic societal needs since Reagan's time.

First Reagan has a liberal legacy, then Bush is more moderate than Reagan and, ta-da! Bush is more Reagan than Reagan.

Having lived through this era, and remembering it well, I think the article is, frankly, bullshit. The supposed "liberal" actions cited in the article were thrust upon Reagan by a somewhat hostile Congress. Had Reagan had control of Congress the way Bush has now, Reagan would have gotten a lot more far right legislation through.

As for the '86 Tax Reform Act, to call it "progressive" is laughable. It lowered the top tax rate from 50% to 26%. So from the time Reagan came in in '81, the top rate was lowered from 70% to 26%. Progressive indeed. And the EITC only really had an effect after Clinton expanded it in '93.

And the author ignores such items as the bloodly "contra" war and "wonderful" judicial appointments such as Scalia.
