They call it a hyote, a cross between a hyena and a coyote. But nobody is sure what it really is. It lives in the backwoods of Maryland, and seems harmless even to pets. There is film and pictures of it:

Anybody have a guess?

I thought maybe a wolverine, but the behavior doesn't match at all, and its not furry enough.

It looks like a hyena to me, except that it's not spotted (are all hyenas spotted?) and it seems to be missing a lot of fur from it's lower back. Maybe it's ill, or an escaped exotic pet that wasn't taken care of very well?

It appears to be a herbivore like a peccary but the head is much smaller.

Wouldn't a hyena show at least some aggressive tendencies?

Look at picture three of eight, from that website. It's very canine in that picture. Plus, it's got a thick neck. I would expect a hyena to be aggressive, but if it were someone's pet it would presumably be tame.

Maybe it's rooting around for field mice or voles?

That woman did mention it eats catfood, so I guess it is a meat eater.

Maybe its a Tasmanian Tiger:

Despite the fact it's lurking in these woods and no one knows when or where it will come out, no one here seems afraid of it.

Does "it" post at babble?

The ears or bigger on the Tasmanian Tiger. It moves like a canine, but has round ears. Otherwise, it looks like a coyote with mange to me.

And yes I do believe it posts on babble...
