I've heard much discussion over the last few days about how Peggy's tied-to-the-hip campaigning with Cheri DiNovo may be driving many supporters into Gerard Kennedy's camp. Apparently, Cheri's increasingly erratic behaviour and firing of three popular staff members last month has lost her a lot of the support she once enjoyed in the riding.

I disregarded these stories because I thought Peggy was a shoo-in for reelection. But in light of last night's shellacking, :-(
I have to think that this was in part a factor.

The fact is that many voters were torn between the two popular candidates. It wouldn't have taken much to drive fence-sitters into one camp or another.

I suspect that Cheri's re-election prospects have also grown dimmer as the rumours spread throughout the riding about the events that led her to fire her staff for the second time over Labour Day weekend.

It's too bad because, even though Peggy is by far the most likable of the two, Cheri is unquestionably the more effective politician and a bright star in the provincial NDP.

I hope Cheri can get her personal demons under control and I hope Peggy can make a comeback because she's one of the classiest politicians I've ever met.

What personal demons? What are the stories going on around the riding about DiNovo?

Getting drunk and firing all her staff on Labour Day, I would assume

I can't think it helped, but no, I expect it's some combination of the increased turnout you get from a general election and strategic voting.

But turnout was lower this time than in 2006 (about 48,000 this time vs. 51,000 two years ago). My guess is that Kennedy drew votes from former Conservative voters. The Conservative candidate did little campaigning and drew about 2,800 votes less than last time. Also, the Green candidate improved on 2006, although that may have drawn votes equally from both Liberals and NDP. I don't think whatever Cheri DiNovo's alleged to have done had any impact - most people wouldn't have even heard about it.

I don't think it had any real effect. There are just more "Kennedy New Democrats" than we want to admit.
