His suggestion of Feb. 24 is well-taken.

However, I would suggest November 21, the date of Mulroney's free-trade "mandate."

To avoid the inevitable quibbles about my choice of date for "Canada Day", may I state my total, unwavering, ephemeral and temporary support for the monarchy, our British heritage and our exalted position in the Commonwealth. In this light, I choose August 24 as Canada Day in the U.S. and think we should celebrate with a recreation of the historic event that occurred in 1814. I'll bring the marshmallows. Tell Dubya to wear the powder blue tie.

Good one. I forgot about that. I'll bring the Dolly Madison ice cream.

Too bad that's not Canada's Canada Day. Then I'd get my birthday as a holiday every year!

Exactly one week before mine. But you miss the Saggatarius cut-off, right?

Isn't it a bit childish to expect the Americans to celebrate us because we're celebrating them? Isn't that a bit like being seven years old and disappointed that the kid down the block didn't invite you to his birthday party because he got to come to yours?

So what if they think we're weak and socialist? I remember that sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me (if I choose not to let them).

I think it's a childish to suggest enacting an "America Day" in Canada. That Globe & Mail column was just mocking that nonsensical idea.

Especially since it's so unnecessary, in the way that there's no need for a White History Month or Straight Pride week.

Ever since Mulroney was prime minister, every day is "America Day" in Canada.
