The goal is to make a telescope that is 30 metres in diameter that dwarfs the world's largest, which is 10 metres in diameter. AMEC, which has been building telescopes for 30 years, helped develop that model.

Halliday said the new "monster" eye won't enable scientists to see any further, they can already see to the end of the universe. But it will make images much clearer.

"This instrument can literally look back to the beginning of time. It can look at galaxies, planetary systems. It can look essentially for life. A lot of the unanswered questions now will possibly be discovered by this telescope," Halliday said.

Scientists are testing possible sites for the telescope in Hawaii, Mexico and Chile.

Couldn't they just hollow out the CN Tower and fill it with lenses?

How come no one's building the world's largest kaleidescope? I want to look in that.

How about the world's largest anoscope? I can think of quite of few huge arseholes who could benefit from that.

...sorry...I'm still running on Paul-Cellucci-induced pique.

Interesting. The Keck interferometer already simulates the effect of having an optical telescope 85m across.

The advantage of a single 30m mirror is that it'll be able to see somewhat fainter objects than the two Keck telescopes (10m apiece) can.
