HaHa...Mulroney is in such a rush to save himself that he grabbed Harper's backpack by mistake and jumped to his demise clutching spare socks and a stale sandwich.Harper made the right decision cutting the alleged thief loose. Remembering the mess the Liberals made of premature charges, waiting for new evidence makes sense. I can understand Harper treading carefully here but I can't see him protecting Mulroney at any cost to himself. The CPC are still too green as government to have mastered the ropes of filling their pockets and the Old Boy's Club most likely doesn't have any evidence to use to coerce government into stonewalling the inquiry. So,Mulroney the "elder statesman" goes from government liability to asset as Harper cuts him loose and claims political credit for open, honest government.

I don't think so. Canadians aren't so stupid. The allegations in the affidavit are no different then the allegations already made to the CBC of which Harper was so dismissive. What happened is Harper's response was seen as spiteful and childish by most Canadians who want to know if Mulroney did have his hands in the cookie jar. If Harper wanted to come off as clean, he would have taken the allegations seriously from the get-go. Instead he tried to protect Mulroney and cast aspersions on the Liberals. It has backfired. Harper is now responding to pressure and the Liberals can play this to ensure Mulroney's stink sticks to Harper given the close relationship between the two. But, the NDP should really be waving this about like a red flag. Liberal or Conservative, they are all crooks.

Maybe. But, after handing out all the tax cuts, its more likely that Harper will get a pass. Was Harper protecting Mulroney or was he trying not to step in the mess Mulroney and the Liberals left behind. If the previous Liberal government had not screwed up the investigation and lost the civil suit Mulroney immediately commenced, maybe the alleged thief would have faced the music sooner. I think Harper showed poor judgement in cozying up to an alleged criminal, especially one accused of using the PMO for sleazy cash-in-a-bag influence peddling.

quote: Originally posted by catherine-l: Harper isn't going to come out of this getting "credit for open, honest government" as jester implies. His office saying that the letter containing allegations [which Harper on Friday called "new allegations"] stopped at the Privy Council Office seven months ago, and even if it was forwarded on to the PMO, "Harper wouldn't have seen it", is just not plausible. No one is going to buy that explanation. The fact that he and/or his office sat on such allegations for months, dismissed any suggestions of investigations, and then had to do an about turn when such allegations became public, means that Harper will not be trusted to handle this appropriately and that calls for an independent investigation (as opposed to advice as to whether an investigation is required) are likely to gain steam.
Of course, catherinel. To you and the handful of others who bother to follow the intricacies of political chicanery,Harper is not absolved. To the legions of Canadians who sit below the salt and of whom only half bother to vote, Harper gave them a tax break and therefore can do no wrong.
