On August 9th, 1943, in Germany, a Roman Catholic conscientious objector named Franz Jagerstatter was beheaded by the Third Reich.

His story was detailed by Gordon Zahn in the 1960's.

Least we forget . . .

I'd love to hear more, Belva. Suppose I'll have to google or do some actual library research ...

The book is called In Solitary Witness: The Life & Death of Franz Jagerstatter by Gordon C. Zahn, published in 1965.

Here are two of many links on Jäggerstätter (the actual German spelling, but not transcribed in most of the English links as Jaegerstaetter, as the umlauts usually are)...

He was an Austrian, but as we know Austria was made a part of Germany in the 1938 annexation.

Edited to add another link, also in German. Some of the English translation is iffy, but this is more detailed, with photos:

belva and lagatta, Thank you for this. I have read about the life of Alfred Delp SJ but I have never heard of Franz Jagerstatter.
