Not a shocker, but interesting nonetheless.

A new doctoral study at Cornell University found that:

quote:
[I]f you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq War more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle....

Masculine overcompensation is the idea that men who are insecure about their masculinity will behave in an extremely masculine way as compensation. [The researcher] wanted to test this idea and also explore whether overcompensation could help explain some attitudes like support for war and animosity to homosexuals....

[A] separate study... verified that support for the Iraq War, homophobia and interest in purchasing an SUV were all considered masculine by study participants.

It does present all sorts of opportunities to say, with full scientific backing, "You must be overcompensating." Of course, ducking is probably a good idea as well.

Pretty funny, but ultimately their research is based on surveys from Cornell's undergraduate population. They have their own special culture there according to some people who went. Maybe it will lead to more interesting research though.

And seriously, SUVs? What's wrong with those men? If they're truly insecure, why go for those overexpensive family vans?

In the spirit of masculine competitiveness, I should point out that I beat you to this story by a couple of days.

I don't get it.

When a man tries to compensate for feelings of insecurity about his masculinity, does he try to act more masculine, and by overcompensating does he act "too masculine"? Is [excessive] masculinity equated with right-wing politics, homophobia, bellicosity and a fondness for large motor vehicles?

Should I be feeling insecure about my own masculinity because I don't share those attitudes?

Or is this research merely reinforcing tired old Freudian gender stereotypes?

I would like to see a study of minivan drivers.

Specifically, why they try driving feats in those vehicles I would not attempt in my sporty little Japanese number and if this correlates with any preference in Gulf War politics.
