I recognise that recession causes hardship. Like everyone I am aware that it would cause some people to lose their jobs and homes. I do not dismiss these impacts or the harm they inflict, though I would argue that they are the avoidable results of an economy designed to maximise growth rather than welfare. What I would like you to recognise is something much less discussed: that, beyond a certain point, hardship is also caused by economic growth.
From here. Is he right, or will the economic crisis do more harm than good, as suggested here?

Wonderful question, and I can see it being endlessly discussed among the politicians weighing their chances among the ranks of the newly unemployed.
But I don't expect conclusions to be reached, because climatic conditiions are not yet bad enough to bring people to honestly discuss real alternatives, like mobilizing around a wartime-like command economy. At least, such thoughts get short shrift around here, so I expect they would not last a nanosecond out there in the realm of the great unread.
