This is from the SF chronicle. Really it is just beyond parody.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/04/IN7D137S4L.DTL American journalists are great when it comes to reporting about corruption in enemy states, somehow they don't see it when it happens at home. The author is a professor of journalism at Stanford which by itself is mind boggling.

Check out the Washington Post which basically threatened to overthrow the governments of Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela if they didn't stick to "democratic norms." Pretty depraved, but also a good indication of the panic that has set in the ruling circles that see an unstoppable wave of change emanating from South America -- the last best hope of humankind.

I think that the US government is begining to realise the threat posed by Chavez, and his ever strengthening alliance with Putin. What afterall will the US government do when the only oil reserves are controled by Chavez and his former Soviet ally? What is the proceedure when the US (and allies) cannot simply invade the countries justifying it with some generic story of quelling some 'Islamic fundamentalist' rebellion? As the threat grows stronger, so will the derision of discourse, that is, the US needs to build up a widespread opposition to Chavez, his politics and alliances in order to gain support for any action which might be taken in the future.

Or thats my thaughts anyway

I was hoping it would grind to a halt, die, and sink into the ocean(s).

Or was that a rhetorical question?

It was intended to be a rhetorical question, but I think your answer pretty much covered it
