quote: Creationism and intelligent design are slated to be the subjects of a Kansas University class next semester — but as mythology, not science.“The KU faculty has had enough,” said Paul Mirecki, chairman of KU’s religious studies department. He said he planned to teach “Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies” next semester. Mirecki’s plans angered some of the state’s religious conservatives, who earlier this month successfully pushed changes in state science standards that critique evolution. And one intelligent design proponent questioned Mirecki’s science credentials.

What???I'm not sure what your criticism is, but I wasn't generalizing about all Christians - I was talking about fundamentalists who claim they are showing "Christian love" when they try to shove their religious beliefs (often oppressive to other religions and sexual orientations) down everyone's throats. So, I'm not sure what you're getting at, if that post is aimed at me. [ 06 December 2005: Message edited by: Michelle ]

Posted by Hephaestion: quote: That is just *sick*. Like I've said before, Kansas should be bombed into black glass -- it's irredeemably stupid.
Would you like to see Iran bombed into black glass? That would be irredeemably stupid. Posted by jrootham: quote: It appears that "fundies" is an insult on a par with "niggers". Who knew?
WTF?

Not that it really needs to be said, but insults about political beliefs(in which we can include ACTIVIST fundamentalism) are an honoured tradition of political debate. Cocktail socialists, limousine liberals, conservative dinosaurs, and so on and so forth.

Oops. I was too brief and therefor obscure, not to mention actually thinking about a different report on the subject than the current link.I was actually referring to this. quote: One recent e-mail from Mirecki sent to members of a student organization referred to religious conservatives as ''fundies'' and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a ''nice slap in their big fat face.'' Mirecki has apologized for those comments.... Hemenway said Mirecki's comments were ''repugnant and vile.''
I would say repugnant and vile is over the top, I would go with mildly insulting.

You have to let us evacuate all the progressives out of Kansas first. Both of them. (OK, seriously, at least the religious faculty of the University of Kansas who are sticking up for evolution)
