The good news: researchers have started figuring out the meaning of Incan khipu, knotted strings.

The bad news: the Incas had accountants.

Link here.

quote:
...Major ancient civilizations, such as Chinese, Egyptian and Mayan, all developed sophisticated, two-dimensional writing systems to track their empires, Urton said.

The use of khipu as Incan ledger books is consistent with ancient cultures, he said...

...Some of the khipu at burial sites had 730 strings grouped in 24 sets, which equals the number of days and months in two years.

More than that. Many of the early writers were under-employed scribes. When they got bored with bookkeeping they wrote scripture and the like.

I always liked G.K. Chesterton's speculation on how pictograph writing started; someone needed to send a message about taxes, and the word for "taxes" sounded like the word for "pig" so they drew a pig; and they ended up with a group of people laughing their heads off while thinking up all sorts of outrageous puns to get the message across.
