Anone out there can contribute to my Habermas knowledge? I know a bit about him, but want more meaty info on his theory of consensus. How does it stand in relation to Marx?

thanks

Behind on your homework?

Anyway, I know I'm not equipped to answer you very well - BUT - I would be game for starting a book thread around some work of Habermas. We could pick an essay or something short, though relevent to your problem, to begin with and read it together, perhaps with others, and then respond. This process might take a few weeks to get anywhere, but it could be well worth it in the end.

Yeah sounds good! I m in Japan for a while though, so it will have to be something we dig up online.

And no I m done school. A philosophy grad in fact, but I somehow never read Habermas. Getting around to it now.

It doesn't matter so much if the essay we choose is specificly about Consensus.

If it's a short book or article, I would be game for that.

I've done a little scouting around, and found a couple of repositories of Habermas' works online.

The aptly titled Habermas Online and the also aptly titled Habermas Links being two of the better ones.

I propose we start with an article from the Habmermas Online site entitled Beyond the Nation State. My reasons are pretty straightforward - it's not that long, it has connections to various themes of interest for me (the EU, nationalism/post-nationalism, and applied Marxian critical theory) and it is topical. Moreover, it is excerpts from a speech, so the language is a little more penetrable to a general audience than would be a written, scholarly text. While this may not provide the best form for getting at the nitty-gritty of comparisons to Marx in the 'high-theory' sense, my understanding of Marx is that he was always urging (if not succeeding himself, mind you) us to engage in praxis - i.e. the application, adjustment, and ultimately understanding of theory only through application to concrete historical events. This was one of his central themes. I think this article might be a good entry point for those interested both in theory and in politics and so being could draw more Babblers into a discussion than pure theory alone. If we manage to get through this with any aplomb, we might tackle something more indigestible...

That's my..ahem...humble proposal.

Excellent, though many of the same hits to be found in the directories I found. Seems to be a lot of stuff on nationalism/post-nationalism...hint...hint....

Tackaberry- Are you asking about his Theory of Communicative Action?

His article in New Left Review 183 (1990), "What Does Socialism Mean Today?" might be a good start.

"What Does Socialism Mean Today?" does appear on online in the sites above. I have it in book form ("After the Fall: the Failure of Communism and the Future of Socialism") -surely available in your average college bookstore as well. It's a short, but rewarding read. Game?

Go to www.questia.com/sm.qst#journal . That’s Questia’s online library. I forgot to mention that you will have to –subscribe- to read it. In ‘advanced search’ look for (in quotations) “After the Fall.” The article by Habermas should appear in the table of contents.

Otherwise Amazon has it in used books. Don’t know if you really want to go to all of this trouble for either source, but the article is in “After the Fall: the Failure of Communism and the Future of Socialism (Verso 1991)” edited by Robin Blackburn.
