This is an idea I hadn't thought of: Thirdworldization of America. When I think about it, it's an interesting concept.

In point of fact, Naming Rumpelstiltskin by Ann Finlayson mentions this phenomenon as well (sorry, no original source): The USA, as of 1994, when she was getting the numbers (this was before the late 1990s dot-com boom), would effectively become a Third World country by 2020 if then-current trends continued. The late 1990s boom has probably postponed that for a few years, but income inequality is still increasing in the USA, and in point of fact, is higher now than ever before.

Noam Chomsky's speech in Vancouver back in '96 was titled "Bringing the Third World Home".
An interesting concept indeed, visible all around us, sadly.
