I'm new here, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any take on this riding.

The fact that a UWO student (Stephen Maynard)was nominated may have changed the dynamic of the race. It seems to have excited some people, and I've heard a little bit of 'buzz'(just stuff on the internets, not crazy-buzz)

Anything to that, you think?
Or are some people overblowing stuff.

Here's a site with more information, and some pics

UWO NDP

And, NO I'm not part of the campaign. I don't even live in the riding, but have friends who do, and just wondered if anyone has a clearer take.

I live in London West and Maynard will get crushed by Liberal cabinet minister Joe Fontana. However, it is good to see a young, dedicated, Western New Democrat run nonetheless. Gina Barber will make another strong showing in my riding but I do not know if she will be able to unseat Sue Barnes (the Liberal candidate in London West for the last 12 years).

But, on the bright side, Irene Mathesynn likely WILL win in London Fanshawe (Liberal MP Pat O' Brien is not running) which means she will become London's first federally-elected New Democrat. So all is not doomed...

Well, at least there's no reason in this riding to consider tactical voting. Last time the NDP got 24.1%, the Conservative 27.4%, and Fontana 43.1%.

Do people in London know what riding they live in? That's a serious question. In Toronto they generally don't, in ridings like Oshawa, Kenora and Welland I think they do. I hope they do in London-Fanshawe too.

I live in the riding, and I'm pumped up about our chances here. I've talked to several people who didn't vote at all last time because they didn't like Joe Swan because of his days on City Council. But this time around they will be voting NDP!

Biggest question I have, is that I don't see any signs? Whats our sign plan, and more importantly am I going to have a sign for X-mas?

"All I want for X-mas is an NDP sign"

It looks like the Stephen Maynard campaign is concentrating heavily on the UWO campus. The student vote was not as much of a factor in the last election, which occurred during the summer.

However, this time there be a significantly higher student vote in this election, as well as more volunteers from the very active NDP campus club. A campus club which mobilized to form government at last year's UWO Model Parliament.

(Not that I expect anyone to know, exactly)...but I hope they aren't planning to just concentrate on students at the risk of ignoring actual residents.

To what extent do student-concentrated campaigns work?

I don't know if anyone knows if student-concentrated campaigns are successful because this is the first time in 25 years that there has been a elxn while students are at university. I say go for it, it is great to see us younguns getting into the game

Federal elections often occur in the fall when students are in university. The 2000 and 1988 elections were in November and 1993 was in October.

True, however how often has there been a student oriented campaign?

To say the least the LNC campaign will prove to be an interesting experiment in seeing if students can be engaged at all, or whether they are a total write off.

Hello. I'm the webmaster for Stephen Maynard's NDP campaign. I came across this thread and wanted to mention a few things

-First, we've just launched a new website for the campaign at www.stephenmaynard.ca which has a lot of really good information about where we stand on the issues and what Steve will do for the London Community once elected
-Second, we feel that we have an excellent chance of winning this riding. The latest polls show us second behind Fontana. The Conservative in this riding is not even in the race; he ran last time in London Fanshawe and was so lacklustre that he lost the nomination to run there again. So, he drove up the road and is now running in North Centre.
-On the issue of signs, we've just received them hot off the presses over the last couple of days and we already have several up around the city. Look for an explosion of Maynard signs starting in the new year.
-Finally, as a student I really take offense to the accusation that students are apathetic about politics. As I have written elsewhere the real problem is that young people are frustrated that their valuable contributions to the political discourse are being overlooked by jaded politicians. We are one of the largest constituencies in Canada that is not represented at all in the House of Commons. The real challenge as far as getting young people to vote is for the parties to take bold and progressive stances on the issues that young people care about (post-secondary education, the environment, democratic reform.)

This is encouraging to hear, although if one were to go by sign volume one would think John Mazzilli was going to sweep London North Centre (personally I would be shocked if any candidate unseated Fontana). I also read in the London Free Press that Maynard faired well against Fontana and Mazzilli in the candidates debate. Just out of curiosity, as part of Maynard's campaign, do you have access to polls in London West and London Fanshawe indicating how Gina Barber and Irene Mathyssen are doing? Please let me know.
