From Arizona:

Candace Dickinson, 23, of Ahwatukee Foothills, Ariz., got a ticket for driving alone in an HOV lane on Interstate 10 on Nov. 8. She fought it in court on grounds that she was pregnant at the time, the Arizona Republic reported.

Judge Dennis Freeman rejected her argument on Tuesday. For HOV purposes, a person is someone who occupies a separate and distinct space in a vehicle, he said.

It's amazing how many different twists the question "is a fetus a person?" can take.

The next one will be when she gets pulled over for speeding and tells the cop the fetus was driving.

At first when I read that story, I thought the woman was in labour, and thought the police officer was an asshole. Then I read more closely, and I'm disgusted with the woman for trying that.

Since the fetus was sitting in the driver's seat, the cop should have allowed the car-pool excuse and charged the fetus with driving without a license.

In BC, for the purposes of an accident report form, MV6020, a fetus qualifies as a passenger at 18 weeks. I don't know if that would work for Lower Mainland HOV lanes, though.

This is clearly a loss for those trying to strike down Roe v. Wade.

Hopefully now people with Multiple Personality Disorder and people with vestigial twins won't bother either.
