Halifax Daily News

"Clearly, there's a war happening in Quebec right now. And it's happening under the guise of we're just going to let it slip away because people aren't talking about it enough in the rest of the country.

"I see that's going to rear its ugly head really, really soon."

He also wants to run to bring his youth to the party and to end the "continuous mockery that's been allowed to take place of my party."

Wasn't he leaning Tory a couple of years ago--and before that, considering an independent run in Dartmouth?

Somehow, "libertarian Conservative" seems more his style...

I didn't catch the interview, but MacIsaac was on Duffster's show at suppertime. He'll have to tidy up his act if he wants to be taken seriously, but what the heck do I know.

He's now saying he's a lifelong Liberal and that his campaign is not a joke, he'd like to at least make the second ballot.

Scott Brison risks becoming known as the other hard-partying, loose-lipped gay Nova Scotian in the race.

In addition to the $50,000, MacIsaac would also "be supported by the signatures of no less than 300 members of the Liberal Party of Canada, of whom there are at least one hundred from each of three different provinces or territories."

That could be tough for a complete outsider. I might be amused by his candidacy, but not enough to pay for a membership in the Liberal Party.

Well, he seems to have been on the right side of the marriage debate, albeit with more bark than bite. But I must say that the last bit of that article screams "Liberal Leader!":
quote:
MacIsaac has made headlines in past years for shouting obscenities at fans during a concert, being charged with marijuana possession, and allegedly making racist comments about Asians and SARS.

In 1996, the then-21-year-old was quoted as saying he enjoyed sexual acts involving urination with his 16-year-old boyfriend.

In 2000, he declared bankruptcy.

I have tended to like what I hear about the guy in the past, and what I've read him say in the gay press. Is there any substance behind these allegations of racism? The only link here which provides any substance is a reference to an Ottawa Citizen article that alleged someone heard him saying something offensive about SARS at a party. Gossip media rumourmill hearsay, or does this have a more meaningful basis beyond that?

I can't imagine that Ashley would refrain from saying pretty much anything, if he thought he could get a rise out of folks by doing do. Particularly if he's been partying.

So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that he's said something racist--he's all about the taboo-breaking, and that's the biggest taboo we've got. I don't think I'd necessarily assume that he beleives what he's saying, although he might. He's way too interested in being outrageous for it's own sake for that to be neccessarily the case.

Aside from the 'taboo-breaking' he appears to have an oversized ego. I suspect this announcement about him running for the leadership is an attempt to buy him publicity and the limelight. I rather suspect he'll be treated quite badly and ridiculed in the press. I don't think he cares.

Did you read Yst's post that you quoted above? Did you notice that it was phrased as a series of questions? It did not claim that Ashley MacIsaac is a racist, or made a racist attack, or assaulted somebody in Guelph. There can be no libel suit there, because no libelous claim was made. In fact, no claim at all was made.

Now, in your other case, a claim was made. It might be libelous, if it is false. It may be true, and therefore not libelous. Personally, I think that it is more likely true than false. But rabble doesn't have to gamble on that by knowingly allowing the claim (or the name of the person that is the subject of the claim) to be published on its site, if it doesn't want to. This shouldn't be very hard to understand.

Yes it is, since it was released months ago in Canada (Sept., 2005) and yesterday's release was U.S. only, where it's safe to say neither the release nor the leadership announcement were headline news.

In other news, MacIsaac has announced his engagement to a young violinist named Andrew Stokes. (Pics at http://ashleymacisaac.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=146 )

MacIsaac has moved on since the days of engaging in water sports with a 16-year-old boyfriend. Stokes is 17.

The NDP too, has had its share of less-than-stellar leadership candidates.

Funny thing about democracy. You can't stop unqualified people from running for office. You can't stop people from running for less than sincere reasons.

Not in any party.

What you can do, however, is not elect them. If Ashley MacIsaac comes in second for the leadership of the Liberal party, I'll concede the party is becoming almost as big a joke as the Conservatives are for having former leader Stockwell Day in cabinet.

I admit that I know nothing about AMcI's music but if some people believe that he is very talented I'll take their word for it. He is making himself look foolish by saying that he wants to be LIberal leader. It's a mystery as to why. If he wanted to promote his musical career ther are much better ways to do it. He should be in the category of "political clowns", people who stand as candidates just to get attention, not because they have any understanding of the issues or interest in public service. I hear that McI says that his "charisma" will somehow benefit Canada .We need that kind of "charisma" like we need more overpaid useless Senators.
