Prominent ex-Greens Urge Support for NDP
Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 03:10 PM: News Release: Victoria NDP candidate David Turner has welcomed the news that 15 prominent former members of the Green Party are urging voters in an open letter to support the NDP. "Today, we are asking you to join us in voting for Jack Layton's renewed NDP. We are not casting our votes for the NDP because we have decided to compromise our values and vote for the 'lesser evil,'" the letter states.
"We are supporting Jack Layton's NDP because they are offering the most socially and ecologically progressive platform of any Canadian political party, including the Greens."
The release of the letter of support follows news that both the Sierra Club of Canada and Greenpeace rated the NDP plan as the best environmental platform, edging out the Conservatives, the Liberals and the Greens.
Turner said former national Green leader Joan Russow has already moved her support to the NDP, and he is pleased that former Green Victoria City Councillor Art Vanden Berg has signed the letter.
"I am glad to see that more Green supporters are realizing that the NDP is the real green party in Canada, and that it is the only party that can and will work to improve our environment," Turner said.
"People in this community are very concerned about the environment because they see what Paul Martin and Gordon Campbell have done, and they know that Stephen Harper would be even worse. As election day draws closer, more and more people recognize that they can count on the NDP to fight to protect the things that really matter to us - like the environment, health care and education."
