Sesame Street - The Subway! I love this one!

Ladybugs' Picnic!

Pinball Countdown!

The Ladybug's Picnic and the Pinball Countdown were my very favorite all-time Sesame Street jingles.

I should see whether they have "Telephone Rock" anywhere. Remember that one?

Of course they've got Telephone Rock.

I'm sending all these to my mother. I think she's still traumatized by Ladybug's Picnic. You should hear her sing it when people talk about the shows our kids watched.

Awesome! Beat you to it though.

Did you know that Pinball Countdown song was done by the Pointer Sisters? I had no idea.

Also, I had to laugh at a couple of the YouTube comments about the Pinball Countdown, suggesting that maybe kids were stoners in the 70's too, considering all the weird visual sequences in the piece that appealed to them.

Oooooooh! The Yip-yip aliens meet a telephone! I love this one!

Oh man, I'm 4 years old again!

Wow. They don't make kids shows like they used to, do they? The stuff they have on now is such glurge in comparison. The Electric Company and Sesame Street were fabulous for people of all ages, including kids. Now, the educational stuff is just sentimental, poorly-acted, condescending crapola. There's not one single Barney song as brilliant as the least inspired Sesame Street song.

Who remembers Kidstuff from Saturday morning CTV? You can't find a thing about it on google, but I still remember the mailing address: P.O. BOX 7070 Station A, Montreal, Quebec.

And how about Let's Go? I wrote to them and they read my letter on air. I still have the T-Shirt they sent me in my collection of strange whatnot. I remember their mailing address too: Let's Go, C/O CKY-TV, Polo Park, Winnipeg Manitoba. R3G-0L7.

Jim "The Hammer" Shapiro! "I cannot RIP OUT THE HEARTS of those who hurt you! I cannot HAND YOU their severed head! But! I can hunt them down and settle the score! I'll squeeze them for every dime I can! Every single dime!"

This guy is for real, by the way. He had a bunch of these commercials playing on upstate New York stations across the border from Kingston. I think he's from Rochester.

I love New York.

That figures!

I loved his commercials when I lived in Kingston. I miss them! One line from one of them always cracked me up: "I may be an S.O.B. - but I'm YOUR S.O.B.!!!"

I wonder if he still has those kind of advertisements? [Edited to add: I guess not. According to the comments on YouTube, the guy lost his license.] I don't think lawyers can get away with advertising like that in Ontario.

Here's a web page someone made with an archive of his ads:
There's something in the water in Rochester

A video that makes an important point about semiotics - words don't mean anything on their own, they have to link to a meaning and that linkage is different in different languages.

A kids' song in Dutch about having a hole in your roof turns into something rude, perplexing and incredibly funny in English.

I think it actually shows how easily subtitles and voiceover can be manipulated. (I always prefer subtitles). At least with subtitles, you (or someone) can call foul. I have seen some subtitled foreign political stuff where the person interviewed did NOT say what the subtitle said. I also had a similar experience with a voiceover (just before the original faded out).
Things can easily be taken out of context with voiceovers especially.

Quite shocking statistics at the conclusion.

Much depressing truth exposing the illusory nature of the medium. One may take from it, at least, the superiority of the message board over the blog.

We suffer our taboos, and on the "commons" democracy, more than a few message boarders feel they have suffered, for views expressed, experience akin to a kangaroo court.

Great quote from this conference: "When I reached the end of my book - of 80 years of duplicity in the Middle-East - I found myself amazed at how much restraint Muslims had shown towards the West."
Thanks CMOT.

Thanks CMOT.

Agreed. Very listenable. The wonder is that 911-type incidents haven't happened many times over.

Of great interest, also, was Noam Chomsky's introduction of Robert Fisk, in which Chomsky speaks of Americans being "protected from the most valuable voices".

Yes, thanks CMOT.
