La bande dessinée "Le chat du rabbin" has come out in an English-language version; evidently the translation is good: http://www.randomhouse.com/pantheon/graphicnovels/rabbiscat.html

A great story for cat lovers and people interested in Jewish and/or Mediterranean cultures, about a fantastic talking cat who lives with a widowed rabbi and his beautiful daughter in colonial Algiers in the 1930s.
