Bush confidante makes blunder on Saddam

Public relations chief says leader gassed ‘hundreds of thousands’ of Iraqis

AP - Karen Hughes, who has faced a rocky road since being named Washington’s public relations chief, answered tough questions Friday about the invasion of Iraq and wrongly stated that Saddam Hussein gassed to death “hundreds of thousands” of his people.

Although the U.S. undersecretary for public diplomacy twice repeated the claim after being challenged by journalists, Gordon Johndroe, a State Department official traveling with Hughes, later called The Associated Press to say she misspoke.

Bah, Hughes' existence is all about PR; "If it's Mattel, it's swell." Facts don't really matter.

Letter to Karen Hughes

quote:
Dear Ms. Hughes:

So you have found out for yourself that Arab women you met in Egypt and Saudi Arabia are just as sophisticated as you are, just as educated—or better, and speak more languages than you. You’ve also discovered that their immediate concern is not really to drive or not, to vote or not, to cover their heads and bodies or not—but for you and America to understand them better.

There was no question that Saddam gassed hundreds of Kurds, not that the US cared much at the time.

Nan, the Kurds of Halapja were gassed with phosgene, the staple munition of Iran. Mustard gas was Iraq's. Doesn't mean Saddam's innocent, but raises questions.

Actually there is question about who did the gassing at Halabja, Iraq or Iran, and actually the US cared enough that Reagan threatened to veto legislation that would have embargoed Iraq over he incident, but in any case, Hughes' whopper is the fictitious number that she used.

I have also read an article in the past (linked to from babble, IIRC) that pointed out how the US and Britain went out of their way to help Hussein cover up his atrocities at the time, since he was still a "good guy" at that point (or, at least, a "bad guy" who was working for the West). Their hypocrisy and lies are appalling.

Karen Hughes lies all the time. I'm sorry to say this, but American mythology and patriotism conditions people to lie (I think America's greatest contribution to the English language had been the various, nuanced ways of denoting lying...hype, spin, fibbing, etc...in contrast, I can only think of one common word for 'lying' in French).

So, for example, Karen Hughes stated recently that the US Constitution indicates that the country is "one nation under God." (something like that). And I firmly believe she thought she was telling the truth, when she said this.
