What can be done about increasing intolerance in elections?

It seems this election is the worst for cases of vandalism and theft of election signs throughout Canada, not just Ottawa. We're supposed to be the tolerant, diverse country of nice guys. What's going on?

EXAMPLES:

Alberta aboriginal candidate target of vandals

Thread Organized sign theft in Ottawa Centre

Globe May31 The case of the missing campaign signs

Election signs destroyed Charlottetown 300 of the NDP's lawn signs

I think Elections Canada needs to toughen laws against this and educate the public that it is not acceptable.

Does anyone else have examples of sign theft or vandalism pertaining to this election?

Is it really the worst? Isn't every election this bad. Imagine what must have happened to PC lawn-signs in '93, particularly after the Chretien-face ad.
