Say, another reason Dalton's a dork. Gee, shall I fund green energy or the same-old, same-old?

quote:
A federal briefing paper stressed the high cost of ITER and likely cost overruns. Environmentalists have emphasized that the experimental reactor will produce no energy and do nothing to solve climate change. In May 2003, however, Ontario Premier-elect Dalton McGuinty supported the ITER project, and has agreed to provide over one billion dollars contingent on matching federal support.

“Dalton McGuinty can still do what’s right for Ontario. Don’t waste billions of dollars on nuclear projects — support green energy instead,” said Shawn-Patrick Stensil, Director of Atmosphere and Energy for the Sierra Club of Canada.

Guess it's a Liberal thing.

quote:
Environmentalists hope that Jean Chrétien’s retirement will mark the beginning of a new energy era in Ottawa.

“Jean Chrétien has had an obsessive love affair with nuclear power for 20 years. It’s time to end this fatal attraction and have a public review of our energy future,” said Mr. Martin. “Nuclear power owes its existence to secrecy and back-room decision-making. A public review will lead to cheaper, cleaner, and safer alternatives.”

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), the crown corporation that sells CANDU reactors, has received over $17 billion in federal subsidies since its inception 50 years ago. The government reneged on a modest 1996 promise to cap AECL subsidies at $100 million beginning in 1998. AECL has received $179 million to date in 2003.

This is the single most disturbing news that has come out of the McGinty election. The old reports from Maurice Strong when he took over the restructuring of Ont Hydro during Bob Rae's era need to be resurrected. Nuclear didn't work then and it won't work now.

If the environment were to come under piecemeal threat under this government, we would not be surprised, but if this is a decision made at the starting gun, the left needs to unite and demonstrate and seek support from where ever it might be found immediately.

I'm trembling!

Bob Hunter (environmental "specialist" who ran for the McGuinty Liberals in the Beaches East York byelection) should be eating his words about now.
