that it's too easily subverted by little things like money and media blitzes/cultures just to name a couple of forces that skew reality. The CBC always refers to (or quotes those who do) suicide bombers as terroristic but not house demolitions or missle attacks. DU (depleted uranium) is a terror surpassed by nothing but our media never presents it that way..... if it's presented at all...........meaning that reality has a hard time getting judged and democracy isn't worth a tinkers da*m if we can't judge what's going on properly.

(Look at Haiti....how long is it going to be before we get the FACTS out to the world at large?....the fickle and self-centred middle class role etc)...........not till Aristide dies a bitter and wronged man I bet.

We are also watching the US election unfold (well some are) but every body knows it's 90% spin and that John Kerry is just a chip off the Bush block (they are distant cousins for crying in the beer)......but still there is so much energy spent on the whole exersize it's as if delusion itself has become dear....a sort of "reasonable facsimile" will have to do under the circumstances sort of thing.........(groan)

Democracy is worth pursuing but there has to be away of keeping it out of the reach of it's controllers/subverters/opportunists..........otherwise humanity is better (and more cheaply), off with a benign socialist dictator. (Yes I'm thinking Castro).

In the last analysis, the way things are now people don't get the info they need to make human decisions...it's all "cooked". (And yes I'm thinking of the monetarist take over in the Ukraine)........well done. ........not a drop of blood spilt but now the country is open to the great corporate invasion..........

Enough I have chores to do. Beth

I don't think that democracy per se is uniquely vulnerable to this sort of manipulation. In many dictatorships there isn't anything but. Feudal Europe had the Catholic church (stacked with bishops who were younger brothers of the aristocrats) telling everyone black was white and the nobility were closer to God.
Hierarchy makes the divide between the interests of most people and the interests of decision-makers. Capitalism makes the ease of subversion by money.

Democracy is a side issue; it remains a basically good thing, just easily sidetracked and more so the stronger the influence of hierarchy and capital.

Oh, yeah--shouldn't this be in "ideas" or something, not Rabble Features?

is that people talk a lot about it, but most people don't really even have a personal defintion for it. It's a catch all buzz word.

... that there are people who don't appreciate the significance of evolving a political system in which the citizens as a whole can choose their own leaders.

Others on babble have defined it better than I, I think, but democracy includes not just the act of voting, but the act of participating. Governments that increase this access are more democratic than those that act to decrease it.

In light of this, COPE's actions to expand access to participatory budgeting make this city more democratic, while the BC Liberals' farces of public consultation and continuing broken promises are actions that lead to a decrease of democracy in this province.

Most people are familiar with the concept of separation of Church and State. I think that the next step has to be a separation of Business of the State. Modern day business has taken the place of the Church in manipulation of government. It has to be brought under control or democracy will die.
