Okay, that makes Hurricaine Katrina, bird flu, the downfall of marriage, the ruin of morals in the modern world... I'd say people better not piss us off, with all the destructive power we have at our fingertips...

A prominent Kabbalah leader says that gays have brought a plague of bird flu on Israel.

Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism, is practiced by thousands around the world - including stars such as Madonna and Sandra Bernhard and Roseanne - although it is not part of mainstream Judaism.

Rabbi David Basri, head of the Magen David Yeshiva in Jerusalem, on Tuesday lashed out at the left of center Meretz Party for running election ads supporting same-sex marriage.

With at least two cases of deadly bird flu reported in Israel, Basri said the outbreak was God's punishment for the promotion of same-sex marriage.

"The Bible says that God punishes depravity first through plagues against animals and then in people," Basri said in a religious edict.

In an interview with the Reuters news agency Basri's son quoted the rabbi as saying the bird flu outbreak stemmed from the leftist pary "strengthening and encouraging homosexuality."

Both Basri and his son are already under investigation by Israeli police over remarks he made about the establishment of a bilingual school for Jewish and Arab students in Jerusalem.

"The nation of Israel is pure and the Arabs are a nation of donkeys. They are an evil disaster, an evil devil, and a nasty affliction," allegedly told followers.

Hate speech is illegal in Israel, although gays and lesbians are not included in the law.

Ya gotta like that: "Hate speech is illegal in Israel, although gays and lesbians are not included in the law."

Because, of course, NOBODY hates gays and lesbians...

Or Jews? They used to be the scapegoats for plagues and pestilence.

The problem, of course, is not only the fact that this rabbi could say such an idiotic thing and not be laughed out of his charge, but that some violent nut could put his bigoted thoughts into action... Like the guy calling for Uri Avnery to be killed.

I read a long time ago you can fry up locusts in the pan for a crunchy meal. Not that the idea interests me. At all.

A little context:

This is a country where, by law, anyone whose mother was Jewish can land at Lod Airport and instantly claim citizenship, whereas non-Jewish Palestinians whose families lived, worked, and owned land for centuries before being chased out in 1949 cannot even vist.

Not exactly fertile soil for enlightened humanitarian thinking.

The terrible irony is that, throughout much of Europe, the blame for the Black Death was of course placed at the feet of Jews.

We don't learn.
