In talks with a top U.N. envoy, Syria promised yesterday to withdraw one-third of its 15,000 troops and 5,000 intelligence agents in Lebanon by the end of March, as the first stage of an operation that would end its 29-year military presence in that country, according to U.S. and U.N. sources.

And only a year and a half after the UN Security Council Resolution! Of course, the Rafik Hariri assassination was five months later, and had much more to do with it than any action from the UN.

(On an interesting tangent, the 562nd richest person in the world is also the youngest billionaire, Hind Hariri, daughter of Rafik.)

Yeah, but I bet they read their newspapers the day they get them, and not a year later.

Happy 1 year anniversary to the Syria announcement!

My bad! Big time. It sure sounded familiar, of course. Coffee time.

Uh, okay, happy anniversary, too.

When's Israel planning on pulling out of the territory they're occupying? How about the US?

What does this have to do with whether or not Syria should end its occupation of Lebanon?

The next logical step would then be for Israel to say "why should we end our occupation when China has been illegally occupying Tibets for way longer!"

No, but it bears on the OP's point about the timeliness. 18 months from the UN resolution is lightening-fast compliance by local standards.

Still setting those high standards for the "Democratic" state of Israel I see.

Shit, you let Syria set the bar too high ... good thing you have China as a backup.
