Hamburg – The alleged intelligence agent al-Sadik, 42, on whose testimony a considerable portion of the investigation is based, has been convicted of , embezzlement and fraud, among other crimes. Even within the UN Commission investigating the murder of Lebanon’s former Prime Minster Rafik al-Hariri, which presented its report on Thursday, there is doubt of the credibility of the Syrian witness.

Sources within UN circles say that Sadik had undeniably lied. At first he had claimed to have left Beirut in the month prior to the deed. Then, at the end of September he admitted to having been involved in the implementation of the assassination. Apparently Sadik had received money from a third party for his testimony. According to a statement by his brother, Sadik had called him from Paris in late summer and said “I’ve become a millionaire!”

Notice that whenever there's too long a lull in the violence, or a glimmer of hope for negotiation, Sharon tends to kill a Palestinian leader in order to restart the cycle.

No Israeli government in history, backed by the US, has offered equal rights to the Palestinians, either in Israel or in the occupied territories. Israel has always demanded a Jewish majority and exclusivity in the shared land, while allowing, in the latest peace proposal, an impossible Palestinian state over a fragmented 8% of historic Palestine. More generous Israelis offer a few more percent.

Does calling for the elimination of a state constitute “a crime against humanity”, as Shimon Peres contends? If so, then Ahmadinejad would be joined in the dock by every Israeli politician who has not only advocated but effected the policy of expansionism that continues to prevent a Palestinian nation state from emerging. The list would be long and illustrious. In 1936, Ben Gurion had said that "the boundaries of Zionist aspirations are the concern of the Jewish people and no external factor will be able to limit them". Moshe Dayan, famed military commander and later an Israeli government minister told the youth of Israel that expansionism was a continuous enterprise. "You have not started it, and you will not finish it!". Elsewhere, he said that "[Israel] must see the sword as the main, if not the only, instrument with which to keep its morale high and to retain its moral tension. Toward this end it may, no - it must - invent dangers, and to do this it must adopt the method of provocation-and-revenge...And above all - let us hope for a new war with the Arab countries, so that we may finally get rid of our troubles and acquire our space".

No negotiation, no potential limit on settlement expansion. It is all quite simple really.

Iranian Leader Repeats Threats To Israel
quote:
Defying the international condemnation heaped on his calls for the destruction of Israel, Iran's ultraconservative president was joined by thousands as he stood behind his words Friday.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad joined an estimated crowd of 200,000 demonstrators in the streets of Tehran for the annual al-Quds Day protests......Burning effigies and Israeli flags, the crowd chanted 'Death to the Zionists' and 'Death to America'.....A resolution was read at the end of the rallies backing the president's declaration that "the Zionist regime must be wiped out." .

quote:
Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew also condemned the remarks in a strongly worded statement issued in Ottawa Thursday.

"We are in the 21st century. Canada will never accept such hatred, intolerance and anti-Semitism. Never," the statement said.

Japan should possess a military not just to defend itself, a role to which it has been restricted for nearly 60 years, but to play a greater role in global security, the main ruling party said on Friday.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's Liberal Democratic Party proposed revising the country's pacifist constitution, which has not been changed since it was written by U.S. Occupation authorities just after World War Two.

An Israeli airstrike yesterday in the Gaza Strip killed two military leaders of radical Palestinian groups, including a senior member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades whose arrest Israel had demanded for months. The attack, hours after the Israeli Cabinet approved an arrangement that would open Gaza's border with Egypt, brought pledges of swift revenge.

The missile strike targeted a car carrying Hassan Madoun, 32, of Al Aqsa, and Fawzi Abu Qara, 37, of Hamas, in Gaza's Jebaliya refugee camp. Hospital officials said six bystanders were wounded in the attack, which broadened an Israeli offensive against armed Palestinian groups that had focused on the relatively small Islamic Jihad faction.
