Jerusalem police may cancel World Pride 2005 claiming they'll be overburned by the unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and won't be able to provide adequate security.

The 10-day, "Jerusalem World Pride 2005," is slated to take place mid-August, just four weeks after Israel's unilateral withdrawal. 9,000 Jewish residents are slated to be evacuated from their homes as part of the plan, with many likely to leave only by force.

"We are examining this issue [of canceling the parade] based on the security needs on the ground," Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said today. No word on when the final decision will be made.

We might recall the remarks of the mayor of Jerusalem last month regarding World Pride:
quote:
The new mayor of Jerusalem has vowed to stop next summer’s World Pride event from coming to the Israeli city. Jerusalem has been holding local pride parades since 2002, little festivals the mayor calls “ugly, insulting, offensive and provocative.” From Queer Day (2nd to last item)

A group of evangelical Christians has teamed up with members of Shas to launch an international petition aimed at canceling the Gay and Lesbian World Pride Parade scheduled for Jerusalem this summer.

Led by California Pastor Leo Giovinetti, the initiative, which will be launched at a news conference in Jerusalem today, is hoping to garner the signatures of an estimated 1 million Jews and Christians worldwide.

"As friends of the state of Israel, we are in a state of heartbreak and shock to hear that you who govern and watch over Israel are planning to allow World Pride 2005, a worldwide gathering of homosexuals, to take place in the holy city of Jerusalem," the petition reads. "You must know that Jerusalem is the Holy City, not only to you but to three of the world's greatest religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It has been the historic position of each of these faiths that homosexuality is an abomination to the one true God."

He must figure there's not enough religious bigotry in the Middle East yet...
