Tommy Lapid's Shinui party is on the verge of bolting from Sharon's coalition over his promising of cash to religious parties in exchange for their support. If Shinui leaves (which now seems certain), Sharon will be left with 40 seats out of 120. Labour has said they will not vote for Sharon's budget because of its cuts to social services. If the budget is not passed by March 31 there will be an election by June 2005. This week Likud lost two non-confidence motions but because of abstentions by the left wing Yahad (formerly Meretz) the motions did not receive the absolute majority required for new elections. Yahad abstained because they don't want the Gaza withdrawal to be preempted by the government's fall.
