re: the marine's suicide,
That's a damned shame. He sounded like a truly decent individual.
I have difficulty saying "fuck 'em" when it comes to individuals in the US military. It is a highly militarized, propagandized society. [It is a place where drooling lying morons like bush jr. can be installed as president!]
Generally okay people can be persuaded to join the military to 'serve their country' ['the greatest country in the world'] and to try to escape grinding poverty [think about the socialism of the US military/consider the US economy without its massive military but no substitute gov't spending!] They will look at the world (when they look at it at all) through the prism of their absolutely fucking useless newsmedia, and see their country as fair, benevolent, but threatened.
That US mother in Fahrenheit 9-11 was a progressive, humane person, who believed a lot of good things about her country and what military service meant.
But few of these people are genuine monsters. They preserve their humanity, and some, when forced to reconcile what they had believed with what they've done, are put in a very difficult state.
These people aren't "stupid" [one of my favourite words]. They're ordinary people who have been lied to on a massive scale.
