I suspect the purpose of the list, in part, is to be a "hit list"and the cat, who belongs to a "self-hating Jew" is a target in order to intimidate its human companion.

Okay, now I have to admit most of these names I've never heard of.

Many of them, I suspect, nobody's ever heard of, apart from their families and friends. Which raises a problem.

I suspect a name like, say, "David Abraham" is rather common. So common, in fact, that there are two in a row there, under "A".

So, supposing I'm David Abraham -- but not one of the David Abrahams on the list. Another David Abraham altogether -- even one who sends money to the Likud Party rather than, say, designing bombs for use by suicidal Hamas volunteers. But the names on the list being accompanied by no further identifying details, I have no way of showing I'm not a self-hating Jew.

So I'm in the position of trying to prove a negative. Did the list-makers think of this logical impossibility? I think not!

I notice, though, that they are scrupulous in their methodology:

quote:
If YOU know of other disgraceful, Israel-bashing Judenrats, feel free to pass on to us their names and information as to why they should be included on this list. (They don't even have to be famous!) You will remain anonymous.

and -- support for Israel aside -- strictly non-partisan when it comes to politics:

quote:
...these radical, leftist, academic, socialist, "progressive," enlightened know-nothings ...

Yes, friends of Israel can sleep easily, knowing that such vigilant and thoughtful people are on the case.

Edited to add:

quote:
I suspect the purpose of the list, in part, is to be a "hit list"and the cat, who belongs to a "self-hating Jew" is a target in order to intimidate its human companion.

Well, just so, Mycroft. There may be self-hating dogs around, but everyone knows a self-hating cat is a contradiction in terms and -- yes -- another logical impossibility.

Well, cats do originally come from Egypt. Maybe that's why they're considered suspect?

Oh, christ. Masada2000.com. Those guys need a serious head-check. They're the equivalent of the creepy semi-respectable right-wing white-supremacist websites you see out there sometimes.

Monica Lewinsky? What the ... she's never said anything about Palestine.

I checked - at least a couple of friends of mine have made the list (one with a photo), another has such a common name that it might or might not be him. Almost none of the signers of the French call "En tant que Juifs" are on the list. In general it is skewed towards USians and Israelis, though I did come across some French and British self-haters, including (orthodox) British head rabbi Jonathan Sachs. I know SEVERAL people who will be mightily pissed off at not having made the list.

Is Alexander Cockburn Jewish? Didn't think he was.

Seriously though, it is a hateful attempt at intimidation.

I'll take your word for it. I usually have the sound on my computer muted, partly to avoid such stuff.

Geez. You'd think they could let old Mordechai Richler rest in peace. Well, wherever he is, he's probably finishing his smoked brisket and latkes, pouring a Glenfiddich, lighting a Cohiba, and laughing. And plotting out a wicked satire of these twerps.

I couldn't find Jerry Seinfeld on the list. I expected to see his name, as he made jokes about snogging in a theatre during Schindler's List.

Woody Allen? He'd be self-hating even if he were a Gentile.

America accused of war crimes in Iraq

quote:
crimes by demolishing homes of suspected insurgents and arresting the relatives of Iraqi fugitives, a top human rights group said today.

The military denied the charges by Human Rights Watch, saying it only destroyed homes that were being used to store weapons or as fighting positions and all Iraqis detained were suspected of taking part in attacks on coalition forces.

"Assertions that the coalition is intentionally attacking homes as a matter of collective punishment are false," said Colonel William Darley, a military spokesman. "People are not arrested because they are related to other suspects - people are detained because they themselves are suspects."

The New York-based human rights group said American soldiers demolished at least four Iraqi homes for no apparent military reason other than to punish the families of anti-US guerrilla suspects.

"Troops are entitled to suppress armed attacks, but they can only destroy a civilian structure when it is being used in an attack," Kenneth Roth, the group's executive director, said in a prepared statement. "These demolitions did not meet the test of military necessity."

The group also accused US military of kidnapping in two cases where American soldiers arrested civilians who happened to be related to guerrilla suspects.

Maybe he can sue them out of existence.

If I were a slightly more naughty person than I am, I'd anonymously suggest a couple of names to add to the self-haters list. After the despicable attack on young Max Silverman by the CJC, I'd suggest that Rudner and Farber are of the self-hating variety.

Of course, I'm not naughty, so I won't do so.

Plus, such an act would put Rudner and Farber on the same list as many respectable Jewish thinkers. I wouldn't want that to happen.

I wouldn't. Not only because I think "self-hating Jew" is a horrible label to stick on anyone because of their political views or opinions, but also because I highly doubt that either Rudner or Farber would endorse this disgusting list or web site.

Jewish or not -- and despite their air of individualism -- I suspect most cats are actually Communists.

Or, to be more precise, Meowists.

Funny thread. You just have to feel sorry for some people, don't you?

I am sorry to tell you, though, that some of my Katzen harbour ethnic prejudices. Mycroft wonders above whether they all came from Egypt, and maybe once they all did (as did all the rest of us, of course), but boy! have some of the Persians taken on a little attitude.

Among my five alone, I have three who seem to have internalized British colonialism and have turned, respectively, to dour Presbyterianism, born-again Methodism, and Bertrand Russell. The other two grew up as urban guerrillas, but one has become a Zen Buddhist. Except for her, the others are all in favour of ethnic cleansing, as in "Why amn't I the only cat in the house, skdadl?" We are the United Nations. *grimace*
