Hague court may brand Israel as 'new South Africa'

Bold words.

Concern is growing in Israel over the forthcoming hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague over the "separation fence" being built in the West Bank.

The Israeli government is worried that the high-profile hearing will severely damage the country's image in international opinion, and the Justice Minister, Tommy Lapid, warned this weekend that the issue could lead to Israel being ostracised and turned into "the South Africa of today".

The "fence", a series of concrete walls, trenches and high metal fences equipped with electronic sensors, is being built across the West Bank. The Israeli government, led by the Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, continues to insist that its sole purpose is to prevent would-be suicide bombers crossing into Israel, but international observers, including President George Bush's National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice, have said that it looks like an attempt to move the border between Israel and the occupied West Bank.

Is it necessarily going to be a hearing? It's only an advisory opinion from what I understand...

Building walls is one thing, building concentration camps is another thing altogether. As if one can hide 'the Palestinian problem' behind walls of shame.

In a way the Israelis have an excellent opportunity to win the admiration of the Arab world, and thus a place in their mids, all they have to do is help the Arabs get rid of the Americans. But that would just be too obvious. Better to stick your head in the sand and shove the sceletons in the closet.
