From Aljazeera.Net

quote:
Two international peace activists have been shot by Israeli soldiers at a Palestinian refugee camp near Nablus.

Details of the shooting were released to Aljazeera.net within hours of the incident on Friday evening, but the identities of the injured are being witheld until their families can be contacted.

The Australian and American men were both shot in the legs at the Balata refugee camp and were taken to Rafidia Hospital where they are now undergoing treatment.

According to the representatives from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), the two were shot after escorting Palestinian children away from Israeli soldiers who entered the camp.

[snip]

ISM officials told Aljazeera.net that Israeli soldiers fired indiscriminately inside the camp before cutting the electricity.

“They (Israeli soldiers) were shooting in complete darkness,” said Aron Baker.

Oh, I'm sure it was just an isolated incident and that the soldiers will be brought to justice.

Oh stop the moral relativism!

What other nation faces a handful of peaceful activists trying to help an oppressed population living under illegal military occupation?

A different take.
quote:
In the town's Balata refugee camp, two foreign volunteers for the International Solidarity Movement were lightly injured by shrapnel during overnight clashes between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli troops.
I don’t know about these people and I don’t know who’s lying, but I do know that Aljazeera is about as reliable as Ann Coulter and Michael Moore.

Lucky you. I "know" no such thing. I suspect as much, and I also suspect that Ann Coulter is a force of evil (as opposed to Moore), but, alas, I "know" very little.

Yet another take:

quote:
Palestinian medical sources mentioned that two peace activists of the Grassroots International Protection for the Palestinians (GIPP) were moderately wounded with heavy machinegun fire by the Israeli occupation soldiers in the vicinity of Balata refugee camp of Nablus.

The sources added that the two activists; American Mark Tourman,24 , was shot with a live bullet in the left foot, while Australian Joush Talf,24 , was wounded with shrapnel in the thigh, when a contingent of Israeli troops stormed the northern part of the refugee camp and opened indiscriminate hail of fire.

Witnesses said that the Israeli soldiers cordoned off the area of “Al Maslakh Al Baladi”, north of Balata refugee camp and went berserk, insanely shot fire towards the civilians houses there.

Edit fix broken link.

And from AP via Haaretz:

quote:
An American peace activist witnessed the arrest raid in the hospital, where he was recovering from light gunshot wounds to his leg. He said he was hurt along with a fellow activist from Australia by IDF gunfire after dark Friday
during clashes in the city's Balata refugee
camp.

Thanks for the links, Slim. I wonder, what exactly is a ‘light’ gunshot wound? Is that like a graze or something? Why the use of the word 'light'? Just strikes me as curious.

I don’t know much either, Hinterland. It’s almost as if I know less and less every day. But I do know a few things. And really, how could a leggy, chain-smokin, hard drinkin, mini-skirt sportin, thin blonde ever be a force of evil?

Generally, when you point a machine gun at someone and fire, your intent is to kill them. The description "light gunshot wound" probably means that the IDF soldier in question didn't achieve his goal.

IDF soldiers are trained to shoot children in the legs. It's usually an accident when their automatic ammunition hits their chest or head.
