quote:
Just as new life is being breathed into the peace process, religious groups throughout the US are whipping up hostility to the road map. The aim of the Christian-Jewish "interfaith Zionist leadership summit" held in Washington last month was "to oppose rewarding murderous Palestinian terrorism with statehood". Attending the conference were some of the most influential figures of the Christian right; behind them a whole infrastructure of churches, radio stations and bible college courses teaching "middle-east history".

...beating ploughshares into swords...

The sad thing is, the average congregant at fundamentalist churches who think Dr. Dobson (Focus on the Family) and people like him are so great just don't seem to know or care about the deeper political implications of their support. They don't see past the superficial veneer of these groups to the nasty political stuff underneath.

We Christians, particularly we evangelical Christians, are not wary or vocal enough about the vipers in our midst. Those of us Christian lefties who take the "separation of church and state" thing seriously don't like to get into political discussions in religious settings because we worry that we will seem partisan. Whereas the right-wing, Christian fundamentalist machine that we either support or acquiesce to, has no problem being political, and they're good at doing it in ways that seem religious rather than political.

It's very disheartening to see people I respect getting sucked into supporting these types of organizations and people.

Some dissension among Christian conservatives on economic policy.

quote:
But win or lose, Alabama's tax-reform crusade is posing a pointed question to the Christian Coalition, Focus on the Family and other groups that seek to import Christian values into national policy: If Jesus were active in politics today, wouldn't he be lobbying for the poor?

quote:
"I've spent a lot of time studying the New Testament, and it has three philosophies: love God, love each other, and take care of the least among you,"

I've been wondering what the fundies have been up to in the last month or so, since we first heard of their plans to go to Iraq and convert the benighted there.

And see what the Jerusalem Post is publishing these days. If only we could just dismiss these people as a harmless fringe element. But they have access to such power -- clearly. I didn't know that Sharon was refusing to talk with the Bishop of Jerusalem, yet happy to see any number of U.S.ian extremists. What is he thinking???
