Please don't add anything to this thread for the time being. I will post a table consisting of: player's names, rating or estimated rating, and any other useful information like "FICS access", "Yahoo access", and so on. This thread could also be used to post the pairings and the results from each round.

OK. I'm not crashing and burning but there have been some changes. I guess that means that there could be more. For the time being, this is only a list. I will try to make the pairings tonight.

This is the list from which the initial pairings of the babble "Cat Herder" Open will be made:

1. Catchfire 1750
2. Sombrero Jack 1700
3. Cueball 1700
4. N.Beltov 1600
5. Albireo 1500
6. rsfarrell 1500
7. Agent 204 1450
8. Jacob Two-Two 1300
9. Gir Draxon 1300
10. danrayd 1250
11. Raos 1100
12. Adam T unr
13. kingblake unr (>pairing est. = 1300)
14. jrootham unr

I fear that I have misrated a number of players so if there is an obvious egregious error then please let me know.

Jacob Two-Two has kindly agreed to be an Appeals Officer in the case of serious dispute. It is my hope that he will have nothing to do in that role.

Sadly, it turns out I'm going to have to withdraw. My schedule has been filling up rapidly. I should have withdrawn before, really.

Good luck to all, and maybe I'll catch you next time.

Your friendly chess administrator will be on the west coast for a few weeks. I should be able to carry out my duties anyway.

Round 3 will probably be for longer than a week. Maybe a week and a half or something.

I give. Got the table to post halfway decent, but the font was near-microfiche. My kingdom for a preview button.

As a matter of fact, commenting, i.e., annotating your own games is an under-appreciated way to improve your chess. All the greats recommend it. And it's very cheap.

Thanks Fidel. A table of the results is reproduced below these comments. W = win, D = draw, L = loss, W/D = withdrew, etc.

In other news, it looks very much like this, the second round, is not going to be finished until Monday or Tuesday. That will make it 2 weeks. I shall have to be an even bigger bastard than I am right now in order to properly herd these chess cats. Mea culpa. mea culpa, mea culpa...

This message contains a deadline. Please read it if it applies to you!

It is now over 2 weeks since Round 2 began. There are still 3 games for which I do not have the results. This chess tournament is going to come to a grinding halt unless some discipline is imposed and, since I am the tournament director, that duty falls upon me.

To review, I have no results for the following games:

danrayd v. Sombrero Jack
Gir Draxon v. Jacob Two-Two
Adam T v. kingblake

Jacob Two-Two, Sombrero Jack and kingblake have been in contact with me. However, I need to hear from danrayd, Gir Draxon and Adam T as well.

I might as well provide a warning here: If someone is unable to continue, they may be assigned a forfeit (a loss) and be required to provide an explanation why they should be allowed to continue. I will not allow the tourney to come to an end due to an inability or unwillingness of some of the participants to continue. For dano, who is waiting to start, and others who are still keen, please be patient. I have not forgotten you.

So I want to hear from danrayd, Gir and Adam T. Are you able to continue?

Other than Jacob Two-Two, who has contacted me today, I am issuing the following:

*******Deadline WARNING *************

For the players who have unfinished games, I want some contact from you by noon, CDT, Wednesday, September 7th. After that date, you may be assigned a forfeit (a loss) for your second round game and be required to give an explanation should you wish to continue. If, in your opinion, you are being held up by your opponent then I want an explanation ASAP. I want a specific date when you agree to finish your game. If you do not provide me with such a date then I will impose one upon you.

There are two incomplete games from Round 2. These are:

danrayd v. Sombrero Jack

I haven't heard from these players for days.

Gir Draxon v. Jacob Two-Two

This game is stalled at move 12 for White, who is in check and facing a serious attack.

I want immediate replies [PM is OK]from danrayd, Sombrero Jack and Gir Draxon on the state of their games.

Whatever happens, I'm going to have to look at introducing some stricter rules regarding rate of play. These cats are hard to herd!

Danrayd has posted only 3 times in the last month, and not at all since 08-24-2005.

Gir Draxon was prolific until 08-27-2005, but has posted only twice since then, on 09-06-2005.

Perhaps these guys are on vacation or something, but there is little else to do but forfeit their games and move on.

I think that we can move on with a clear conscience, since both have posted since the date when NB posted this round's matchups and the deadline.

We should keep on moving, and if possible maybe these 2 could be paired up for the next round, just in case.

I appreciate the comments from Albireo, kingblake, rsfarrell and Catchfire. It is time to move on. And I should apologize to dano, for example, who may have gotten bored waiting for his opportunity to play.

I am, myself, partly at fault for the delay since I have been travelling, although I posted while I was doing so, and I recently became employed again. But enough is enough.

Gir Draxon actually communicated with me by PM last week (Sept 6) to tell me that he was looking to continue his game. I've not heard from danrayd for some time longer than that. I'm prepared to give these players 24 hours to finish their games [with my assistance if necessary] but beyond that I will be giving them a forfeit.

However, even with 2 forfeits for Gir Draxon and danrayd, I still have a small problem. Do I pair these 2 players for the next round? Here is my somewhat unorthodox solution to that question: I will pair Gir Draxon with danrayd in the next round. That way, should both players wish to withdraw [or simply neglect to reply], there will be the smallest disruption to the rest of the players who, presumably, still wish to play.

Just for the record, when I post the pairings for round 3 I will note some stricter enforcement of time constraints on all players. I haven't figured out this completely but I'm giving fair warning.

Gir Draxon and danrayd! You have until Thursday at 6 pm to complete your games! Sombrero Jack and Jacob Two-Two! Be available if necessary to complete these games! And if anything happens, or is about to happen, for either of these games, inform me at the start, in the middle and at the end.

The babble Cat Herder Open shall continue! Expect pairings for the next round on Friday or thereabouts! We are looking at 3 more rounds (for a total of five rounds) to complete the event. Prizes, if any, to be determined.

The crosstable follows. In regard to the uncoming pairings, I will pair Gir Draxon with danrayd in the 3rd round (as noted previously). The other pairings should be available this (Friday) evening. When I post the pairings I will outline some stricter enforcement of time constraints.

Here are the pairings for Round 3. The first player listed plays with the White pieces.

Sombrero Jack - Albireo
rsfarrell - Catchfire
Jacob Two-Two - N.Beltov
kingblake - dano
Raos - jrootham
Cueball - Adam T
Gir Draxon - danrayd

1. For ALL players, except Jacob Two-Two, please confirm that you are aware of your pairing by sending me a PM to that effect. For Jacob Two-Two - just PM me and suggest a date/time/method of play. [Sept 18 - I've heard from Sombrero Jack, kingblake, dano and Raos so far. Ahem! (Taps his foot impatiently on the floor...)]

2. A rough guideline of 60 minutes a side is the time control. This is not cast in stone but I would strongly recommend coming to an agreement with your opponent before the game starts about the time controls. We have been using, it seems, one of three arrangements: FICS, Yahoo, or e mail. One of the first two choices is strongly recommended.

3. This round will last 2 weeks. That is, I am looking to see the end of round 3 by midnight, Winnipeg time, on September 30th. Please do not wait until September 30 at 10 pm before you think you may have a problem finishing your game! I will not be amused!

4. If neither Gir Draxon nor danrayd reply to me before 30 September then I will consider both of them to have withdrawn and I will not pair either of them for further rounds. If either or both of these players reply before that date and wish to continue - fine. [edited to add: Gir has withdrawn.]

5. I want to encourage players to document the moves of the games in some manner and I also encourage players to submit their game scores (the moves), with or without annotations.

6. Any questions? Send me a PM if it is not of general interest, otherwise please feel free to use this Administration thread for questions.

Good luck! The babble Cat Herder Open continues with Round 3.

I'd like to apologize for my negligence. I've had to deal with a lot of things lately, and I'm not out of the woods yet. Therefore I hereby withdraw from this tournament. Hopefully when I'm able to resume more regular posting, some people will be up for the odd exhibition game

But for now, I must bid you all farewell, at least for a little while.

If you can help me remember which way the horsey bit moves I'm in!

Chess is one of those things I've always meant to learn....

Thanks for the invite, though.

Suzette: If you can help me remember which way the horsey bit moves I'm in!

The "horsey" moves like the letter "L" with one leg of the "L" measuring 2 squares and one leg of the "L" measuring 1 square. In the official rules of chess it is expressed as follows: "The knight may move to one of the squares nearest to that on which it stands but not on the same rank, file or diagonal."

The Rules of Chess from the Chess Federation of Canada.

The "knight" (as it is usually called) is the only [see note] chess piece able to jump over other chess pieces and, therefore, even if the knight is surrounded it can escape by leaping away. Nice horsey.

Chess is one of those things I've always meant to learn....

A thousand years ago, when chess was young, medieval ladies learned to play and taught their daughters as well. It's never too late to learn.

.......... I am in a bit of a pickle, however. We currently have an odd number of players, presuming that danrayd does not withdraw, and that means that if nothing changes then someone will have to take a forced bye in round 4. So my offer to Suzette is an open offer. Volunteers?

.............

note: There is a special move in chess, called "castling", in which the king is moved two squares towards the rook (sometimes called the "castle") and then the rook "jumps over" the king to land on the square over which the king has just passed. But this special move can be played only once by any player during the course of the game.

No, it's not too late. I expect I will do so at some point.

As for the "horsey", I was just, well, horsing around there. I do know how the pieces move, but that's as far as it goes.

Good luck with your quest.

C'mon you babble cats. Whassup? It's been a week since the pairings for Round 3 have been posted and I've heard **squat** in terms of results. [Cue video of John C. McGinley berating Keanu Reeves fondling a surfboard in Point Break.] Squat!!

P.S. Jacob Two-Two. Let's play this weekend, or soon, OK? I don't want to violate my own rules...

Keep trying to contact him. That's all I can do as TD until Friday. He's played a couple of games and I have no reason to doubt that he will play some more games.

BTW, what's behind not posting anymore? PM me if you would prefer a private reply. Apologies if I missed an important previous contribution.

Jacob Two-Two has had some bad luck as a result of which he cannot access his/a computer to complete our game. It's not clear to me when that will happen. So I think what I will do, unless there are strong objections, is to treat our game as a draw for the purposes of pairing and allow the other players to continue with Round 4.

danrayd has not posted here on babble since Aug 24 but since his game was against Gir Draxon I will simply treat the both of them as withdrawals. But I shall have to default Adam T as well - he hasn't posted since Thursday over a week ago and has sent nothing by way of an explanatory remark to me or, to the best of my knowledge, his opponent Cueball.

So here is the crosstable after 3 rounds.
