The Ottawa Citizen is reporting on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), a secret agreement reported to have been drafted by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, parts of which were just leaked on Wikileaks. From what little is known so far, ACTA would require border guards to seize & search through your iPods, laptops and even cellphones in order to look for violations of copyright laws, force ISPs to hand over customer details with a simple accusation of copyright violation (without warrants), and grant private security personnel the authority to order searches without a lawyer present "and other preliminary measures." Negotiations have been, of course, secret. It is reportedly to be implemented as a federal trade agreement because such treaties don't need parliamentary approval.

The Harper government had to shelve the so-called "Canadian DMCA" bill for now because of massive public outcry, but now they seem to be trying to implement it piecemeal through international trade agreements. Learn more.

How many more of these non-transparent, anti-democratic agreements have been made with foreign governments and industry that we don't even know about (some have only come to light through indirect sources)?
What we have is a secret, anti-democratic junta with a smiley face of democracy pasted onto parliament.

"Secrecy is a Harper trademark - journalists

Conservative government wins top marks again in reverse competition.

Harper and his communications director Sandra Buckler shut out unfriendly reporters - CAJ.OTTAWA, May 20: Stephen Harper's office leads the list of nominees for this year's Code of Silence Award, to be handed out by the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) later this month.

The prime minister was cited by several members of the organization for having "muzzled" cabinet ministers, civil servants, and, particularly, professional scientists. He has forced Tory Mps to vet their comments to reporters through his office, and his handlers have "cherry-picked questions from friendly journalists and blackballed reporters who dared to ask questions out of turn," according to a CAJ news release. The government "has stalled and denied freedom of information requests and, most recently, the PMO suspended a key access to information database."

"Killing the registry was the last straw for many reporters," said CAJ President Mary Agnes Welch. "There's a broad and deliberate attempt on the part of Harper and his staff to limit Canadians' right to know by ducking reporters' questions, hoarding documents that ought to be public and choreographing nearly every word uttered by civil servants and cabinet ministers." ..."Harper Index

Seriously, Emerson is a more seasoned political hack. If he makes less fascist-sounding pronouncements than that turd Bernier did every time he opened his mouth, I'll definitely hail the lesser of two evils.

Why is it better to have "less fascist sounding" utterances from a seasoned political hack, who will nevertheless be enacting the exact same policy handed down from the PM's Office to Bernier?
Don't you believe in truth in advertising?

Exatcly I like when they let the public know they are bigoted racist greed fucks. At least they we can have governance to the right of conservatives(if only a wee bit) for the next dozen years or so.

Actually, Emerson might be worse - incompetence causes problems, but it takes smarts to do real harm. Emerson is smart and seasoned, as has been pointed out, which means he's better able to mold public perception to his benefit (and keep quiet when it serves their agenda). And as the leak of this secret trade deal shows, he has no problem enacting Harper's agenda even if it attacks civil liberties. At least we could be sure that Bernier wouldn't have dreamed up this diabolical plan on his own, and the public would have had a better chance at discovery if it were his file.

Interesting that this international treaty deals is intended to enact new trade laws within Canada via the backdoor route: and now both protfolios are with Emerson.
