...but apparently these are good terrorists.
quote:

The fourth man, Luis Posada Carriles, was the most notorious member of this anti-Castro cell. He is an escapee from a prison in Venezuela, where he was incarcerated for blowing up an Air Cubana passenger plane in 1976, killing 73. He also admitted plotting six hotel bombings in Havana that killed one tourist and injured 11 others in 1997. Posada has gone into hiding in Honduras while seeking a Central American country that will harbor him, prompting Honduran President Ricardo Maduro to demand an explanation from the Bush administration on how a renowned terrorist could enter his country using a false U.S. passport.

Come on. Since when did blowing up airliners and bombing civilian targets count as terrorism?

Carriles was to have had a hearing yesterday; I'd appreciate any news link about what happened.

Here.

The U.S. office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said this week it is moving forward to carry out Mr. Posada's removal from the United States. But it ruled out sending him to Cuba or Venezuela, because he might be tortured there.

"Might be tortured"? Were they thinking of sending to to GitMo?

Thanks for that, No Yards. While I was googling about for info, one article said Carriles was an escapee from a Venezuelan cell. Interesting that they didn't torture Carriles then, when the crime was fresh..but would torture a 77-year old for a 30-year old crime, now.

That is such a fucking joke. Might be tortured . . . you know, in Venezuela they had guys waiting to be tried for top-level involvement in overthrowing the government, and where did they put them? House arrest, for God's sake (from which they forthwith escaped and pissed off to Miami)! And these murdering, torturing Bushmen have the nerve to call the bone china black!

You are right, Rufus! The US administration has a specific policy of rendition to countries where they know people will be tortured, and that's why they are sent there.

That's what happened to Maher Arar, and to many others, too.

So now they won't return this guy to Venezuela or Cuba because he might be tortured? It is to laugh.

This is a policy decision in favour of Carriles masquerading as a decision of principle.
