This is nothing new. Many foreign nationals have ran under the cover of Canadians, because everyone loves us so much.

Israel used Canadian passports to get close and assasinate people in Jordan.

There is a joke going around, one that I can't remember where I've heard, that goes:

Europeans can easily tell which backpackers are American or Canadian. Americans have Canadian flags on their back pack while Canadians have the Mountain Equipment Co-op label on their back packs.

I've always been a bit skeptical, to say the least, of Canadian tales of American backpackers passing themselves off as Canadians. Even assuming it's happened, I'm sure it's far less than many Canadians would like to believe.

On the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban, I once offered a prize consisting of $100 (Canadian, natch) and a gallon (er, four-litre) can of Ottawa Valley maple syrup (accept no substitutes) to any American who could produce documentary evidence (photos etc.) that s/he or a friend had ever sewed a maple leaf on a backpack and pretended to be Canadian.

I got no takers. Obviously this isn't proof it hasn't happened. But as with the story of Yanks showing up at the border in July with skiis strapped to their cars, I'll wait until the facts are in.

I notice the Star story didn't turn up a student who'd pretended to be Canadian. Rather, it was a friend of the patriotic young man. Right.
