There's a marvellous article in the current Harpers that explodes the basis for assuming genetic modification produces predictable mutations. It ends on a truly John Wyndam note with millions of acres of North American farmland given over to a vast uncontrollable genetic experiment.

A "Biotechnology Surveillance Project". Well, that's just what we need...

"Okay, so you guys eat all this new stuff we don't know squat about.... Yeah, sure, feed it to your kids.... And we'll, like, sit here and watch and see if it causes any problems..."

Comforting. Now I really want to feed this stuff to the squirts....

If China and Mexico can label the goddam stuff, then why can't we?

China and Mexico are going to be hit with huge lawsuits and they'll lose. Mexico will pay up; China won't and nobody will mention it again. Canada would settle out of court - pay +/- 5 mil ... if the government felt threatened enough by the voters to try labelling, and the big boys consequently lost $14 in estimated sales.

Besides, who would monitor the accuracy of labelling? We (in Ontario) have maybe three food safety inspectors left, and they're running their '95 Hyundais into the ground, trying to get from one abbatoir to the next, testing for mad cow disease. (Your Tax Dollars at Work)
