Canadians like to think we have a kinder, more tolerant and generous society than that of our southern neighbours, but when it comes to charitable donations Canadians are much more stingy

The average Canadian gives .64% of income to charity while the average American gives 1.58% The average Canadian donor parts with $915; the American $3441...

There are still 75% of Canadian taxpayers who donate nothing, or at least nothing that merits a tax deduction...

Just a note, respond as you will. Find someway to twist this out to how bad Americans "pigs" are.

Kindly add to the Canadian total charity the cost of all our social services that Americans don't have and then recalculate the averages. See what you come up with.

And who here called Americans "pigs," Markbo?

Methinks you're trying to be a marionette-master again -- or resorting to the old straw-man (straw house?) tactic...

Edited to add: incidentally, what is the source of this quotation?

Indeed, we used to have a kinder, more tolerant, and generous society when, as totl says, "charity" was less necessary, polarization of incomes having been less serious and our public services healthier.

I don't entirely discount the value to social health of citizens' getting out into their communities and actively contributing something of themselves, beyond what they might passively channel through the state. But "charity" has its nasty side, too -- surely the dispossessed should not also have to bear the burden of feeding the egos and condescension of the picky-choosey Ladies Bountiful of the world.

It is true, of course, that Canada has produced strikingly few major philanthropists or patrons of the arts. Our wealthy are rather better known for getting their money out of the country as quickly as possible.

The only purpose of this thread is to instigate, so I'm closing it.
