The suppression of the Florida recount, and the Times’ justification for it, exemplify the role of the media as a de facto organ of the state. Journalists like Berke, who occupy prominent positions within the media establishment, no longer conceive of themselves, even remotely, as protectors of democratic institutions and the rights of the people, with a responsibility to inform and educate the public so that it can assert its interests in opposition to those who wield power.

Surely, now that the suppression is public, however smarmily the Times may be attempting to rationalize it, pressure is going to build to publish the report.

There are too many researchers in a number of fields who want and need the data for the report to be suppressed for long.

I really doubt the public cares at this point. Public opinion will be against anybody who presses the issue. Anybody who protests the suppresion of the recount will be accused of being an anti-american trouble-maker.
