Nobody has posted this, but as of yesterday John Efford left cabinet due to his health, and John McCallum took over his duties on an interem basis.

I recall him saying months ago that he wouldn't run again because of his health. At the time it sort of smacked of an honourable way out, to avoid the danger of losing in the next election, but I guess it's a lot more serious than it seemed.

Efford is still in cabinet as the province's regional minister.

"I would like to make it clear that I am not resigning from my position."

quote:
I will be available for key votes in the House and other important issues as my health allows.
"I will continue to work with my Cabinet colleagues to ensure that the interests of Newfoundland and Labrador continue to be represented at the Cabinet table.
"It is my hope that my health will improve to a level that will allow me to resume my day-to-day duties as Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and to also offer for re-election when that time comes.

According to today's Globe and Mail article, McCallum is only the Acting Minister. Paul Martin wanted to avoid entirely replacing Efford, since that might've caused some controversy among his NFLD caucus, an unwise situation with an election not too far off. In the meantime, while Efford originally said that he won't run again, he's now saying that he plans on running again if his health improves.
